Day:
NEW YORK
One
day in New York is hardly enough time to see all the city’s
wonderful attractions. Home to some of the finest museums in the
world, you could spend a week in New York and not see all of their
treasures.
A
good place to start your tour of New York is at the Museum of Modern
Art (MoMA) on 53rd Street between 6th and 7th Aves. It has one of
the most revered collections of modern art ever assembled. You can
see such master works as Van Gogh’s Starry Night and
a room full of Monet’s Water Lillies. Plan to spend
at least a couple of hours here.
Just
a couple of block south on 6th Ave. is Rockefeller Center, this city
within a city is a 21-acre Art Deco plaza that is a wonderland of
restaurants, theaters, and other imposing structures. It is also the
site of the world-famous Christmas tree lighting and ice-skating
rink, as well as Radio City Music Hall and NBC Studios.
Grab
lunch in the area and head over to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th
Avenue and 51st Street. America’s largest Catholic
Cathedral, St. Patrick’s tall spires and stained glass windows
can’t be missed.
Head
over to Times Square at 47th Street and 7th Avenue to
see some of New York’s flash. The revitalized area is much more
tourist-friendly with restaurants like the ESPN Zone and respectable
stores like Warner Brothers and Disney. If you’re in your teens,
you might be interested in checking out 1515 Broadway, the MTV
studios. On weekday afternoons, truant MTV fans fill the streets to
wave to Carson Daly and try to get on camera.
The
more adventurous will take this opportunity to take the infamous New
York subway. From Times Square, take the #2 or # 3 train downtown to
Chambers Street, get off and take the local #1 or #9 across the
tracks one stop to Cortland Ave. This stop will put you directly
underneath the World Trade Center. Get out at any exit and look up,
you should be able to find the Twin Towers now. Check out the sunset
from over 107 stories.
